In my experience, there are three kinds of people in the world today.
The first has no phone, no social media, no messaging apps. It’s an increasingly rare type, almost extinct. The other two have all of it, but they react in different ways.
The second is neurotic and tries to answer every notification that comes in. Each one that pops up has to disappear, as if every red badge were a problem waiting to be fixed. Every time the phone buzzes, something in them goes restless. Whether they’re eating, working, in the middle of a conversation or resting, doesn’t matter. The vibration wins.
The third ignores most notifications on purpose. The phone buzzes all day long. And they pay attention only to the things that matter to them and let everything else slide by. Every now and then they do a big sweep, answer a few of them (months later), and finish off the rest by ignoring them completely, sometimes without even reading.
I spent years being the second, judging the third, and wishing I were the first.
